I was honoured to receive the Graham Wilkinson/Graphic Studio Dublin Printmaking Award at the RHA Annual Exhibition. My piece: we leave tonight - the beach huts’ conspiracy is a multi-plate colour etching, and was made once the studio re-opened after a four month closure during the pandemic last year.
The print explores the search for something unattainable, with a group of unsteady beach huts, contemplating escape, a dark skyline in the background, their stilted legs ready to move. The houses and dwellings in my work are often anthropomorphic, and I love the absurdity of these structures deciding to take off, while being rooted firmly to the ground. Our rootedness can often be a state of mind.
